English for Specific Academic Purposes

Over the past few years there has been a growing recognition of the need to teach discipline-specific academic skills, critical thinking skills and language. This award winning series is designed to address this need and is like to other resource currently available. Each of the books in the series follows the same format, with 12 units per book providing between four and six hours of classroom activity, withthe added flexibility of a further two to four hours of using the suggested extra activities in the teacher's book. As a core component of faculty-specific courses, each ESA{ title therefore provides between 50 and 80 hours of teaching material.

1. Academic Encounters

Academic Encounters is an academic preparation series that uses authentic materials and a sustained-content approach to teach students the skills they need to take academic courses in English.

There are two books in the series for each content focus: an Academic Encounters title that teaches reading, study skills, and writing; and an Academic Listening Encounters title that concentrates on developing students' listening, note-taking, and discussion skills. 9. College Vocabulary 1-4

The Vocabulary strand is designed to support the Oral Communication, Reading, and Writing strands by helping students develop the ability to understand and use the vocabulary in those strands which come from the Academic Word List (AWL). These books can be used as stand alone texts in a vocabulary class or as supplements in reading, writing, or oral communication classes.

Each book in Academic Word Power 1–4 focuses on 140 word families from the Academic Word List, allowing instructors to take the guesswork out of choosing which vocabulary words are most necessary to propel ESL, Developmental English, and high school students toward success reading college textbooks.

11. American Vocabulary Program 1-3
The three books in the American Vocabulary Program provide the essential vocabulary and practice of all types of lexical items: words, word partnerships, and fixed expressions. Over 1,000 words and phrases are taught at each level.

12. Essential Academic Vocabulary

Essential Academic Vocabulary prepares students for academic success by helping them preview, learn, and practice vocabulary from the Academic Word List in context. Engaging academic readings highlight chapter vocabulary in context. From chapter to chapter, the readings and vocabulary increase in complexity level, allowing students to establish and build upon a solid vocabulary foundation.

13. Exploring Content Series Reading for Academic Success Books 1&2

Exploring Content engages English language learners in authentic academic content so they will succeed in college classes. Readings from college textbooks and supporting exercices teach students essential reading and study skills as well as academic and content vocabulary.

  • Five units, consisting of two related chapters, explore fields such as astronomy, chemistry, anthropology, history, art, art history, and psychology.
  • Art, illustrations, and graphs enhance each reading and help students understand important information.
  • Reading and study skills are introduced throughout the book. These skills include previewing vocabulary and content, highlighting, monitoring comprehension, and understanding and creating graphic organizers.
  • Unit follow-up activities, including writing assignments and Internet research, allow students to apply and extend what they have learned.
